Dune Movie Working Still |
Dune was undoubtedly one of the most anticipated titles of the 2021 film season. The film – directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem – is the adaptation of the first part of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel of the same name and has grossed over $ 400 million worldwide. As if that weren’t enough, the film received ten nominations – including Best Picture – for the 2022 Oscars.
Dune follows the journey of young Paul Atreides as his family moves to the desert planet of Arrakis, the most precious planet in the galaxy known for its unique ability to produce the coveted drug Melange, also known as Spice (Spice), which can be used to extend a person’s life and awaken dormant areas of the human mind.
When House Harkonnen manages to regain control of the planet and kill Paul’s father, the boy flees into the desert with his mother. Along the way, due to drug exposure, Paul begins to have premonitory visions of many possible futures.
Director Denis Villeneuve, in an interview with the Directors Guild America, revealed that Paul’s visions were inspired by his experience with drugs from a marijuana-infused banana cake made by his son. “The truth is that one thing that helped me a lot in directing Timothée Chalamet is that my son had cooked a banana cake a few months before we shot the movie, and the banana cake was very ‘spiced’ and I had the trip. worst of my life.
But he helped me tremendously, he seems stupid, but sometimes it’s nice to experience things by yourself. That bad trip, because of the marijuana, helped me to direct Timothée in the visions, to explain to him the state in which I had been. And, strangely, when I mentioned the banana cake experience to Timothee, he understood it! Here is the truth. Don’t try to do it at home! ”Said the director.
